WHY DO BULLDOGS COST SO MUCH?

If your first thought is "the price is too high", you may want to reconsider purchasing a bulldog.   The truth is, you should be worrying really "the price is too cheap".  The following explains why.

Bulldogs need good diets for the duration of their lives.  They need quality vet care, and lots of attention and dog products.  It is important that you realize the first investment purchase is not the only investment in your bulldog.

Secondly, you will want to purchase from a high quality bulldog breeder.  You may be thinking "I can find a bulldog for a cheaper price then this".  But then there is more you must consider.  Because a cheap bulldog, doesn't mean a cheap bulldog life.  It is important that you realize a sick bulldog puppy, will easily tap a $500 vet bill and more on its first visit alone.   And hundreds of dollars for concurrent visits.  Time off from work, sadness in watching your puppy be sick, your children suffering if the puppy dies, we have been there, and we want others to learn from our mistakes.  Why should you make mistakes, we have already suffered?  Understand?

In order to breed high quality, healthy bulldogs, a breeder must invest a lot of time and money.  Breeding quality english bulldogs it is not cheap!   And there is a difference in bulldogs.

There is a great deal of time, effort and expense involved in raising a Bulldog litter.  The average litter cost is $3000 to $5000.    The average litter size is 4 to 6.   I have to laugh most times folks tell me that I must make so much money breeding bulldogs!

Getting the female ready for breeding requires pre-breeding testing, ovulation testing, etc. - approximately 3 trips to the vet. Then the female is usually artificially inseminated, another 3 trips to the vet, not to mention the expense for the semen/stud service which is $500 and up. Then you wait 4 weeks for an ultrasound and/or x-rays. (It is important to be sure the female is pregnant).

Special diets and constant monitoring for the next 5 weeks, plus getting the nursery getting with heating pads, bottles, blankets, medical supplies, milk replace, puppy scale, and the list goes on and on. Then comes the C-section which can costs upwards of $1000 assuming she went into labor during regular office hours and all went well.

Females produce only 2 -3 litters. This is a special breed which requires the help of humans to bring a litter to 8 weeks of age. In spite of their appearance the Bulldog, as a newborn puppy is extremely fragile. It requires constant monitoring of the puppies (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Bulldogs don't make the best mothers because when cleaning a puppy, they may be reaching over another one, and suffocate it.  A bulldog is a big mama, and not graceful, and so cannot sleep with her pups.  Bulldog pups must be fed at 2 hour intervals the first week or two, which means no time for the breeder to go to work, and no time for sleep.

The puppies are normally checked by the vet at least 4 times during their first 8 weeks, including de-worming and puppy shots. It is a breed that requires more effort then other breeds to raise a healthy quality litter.

As you can see the entire procedure, is quite costly and you may even lose money taking time off work.   The average price of a bulldog is $2000.

You must BEWARE of breeders range their pet  "great deals" and "cheap puppies", they may cost you alot more in the end - not just money, but your time, and most of all your heartache, because having a sick bulldog is so devastating, and they are so loving to see them sad, and sick is heart wrenching.

So please do your homework!  Find a good bulldog breeder, who health tests and knows the quality of their lines.  Best wishes and welcome to the world of bulldogs!
